How to correct an already submitted tax return
Do not panic! If you find a mistake on your tax return after it has been submitted, the IRS allows taxpayers to correct errors or make changes to a return by filing an amended tax return on Form 1040-X.
If you're expecting a refund from your original return, you should wait until you receive it before filing an amended return. You can cash your original refund check or use your direct deposit refund while waiting for an additional refund. If you owe more tax, you should file your amended return and pay the tax as soon as possible to avoid interest and penalties.
When is an amendment necessary?
An amendment is not required for all errors. The IRS can fix math or clerical errors on your return and let you know by mail. The IRS can also request a separate form, if missed in the original filing, to be sent by mail instead of completing an amendment.
- File an amended return if you find errors in any of the following on your original return:
- Filing status
- Changes in dependents
- Income
- Deductions
- Credits
How long do I have to file an amendment?
Generally, to claim a refund, you must file an amended return within 3 years after the date you filed your original return or 2 years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed early, count from the April tax deadline.
How do I amend my tax return?
To amend your return, you should follow these steps:
- File Form 1040-X for each year you are amending. You may also need to amend your state return if filing a federal amendment.
- Include the new Form 1040 and other forms or schedules impacted by the amendment. Avoid attaching the original return or any documents not relevant to the changes.
- Explain the reason for the change in Part III of Form 1040-X. Be specific and clear about why and what you are changing.
- Send your completed Form 1040-X and 'as-amended' Form 1040 along with other forms and schedules to the appropriate IRS mailing address for your region.
