FreeTaxUSA invites paid tax preparer’s to use our software for the preparation and filing of their customers’ tax returns. It’s the same tax preparation software as many other retail level software applications, with the bonus of real-time available help from FreeTaxUSA licensed tax professionals when the Pro-Support level of service is purchased with each account and tax return prepared.
Are there paid preparer accounts?
One of the key points to be aware of, however, is the paid tax preparer must create a separate account for each tax return being prepared. One account, one return.
Although we may offer a paid preparer version of FreeTaxUSA with client management in the future, this is not currently available. This means the paid preparer must create a unique username for each customer’s tax return, and we recommend creating a unique password as well for greater security.
Can I file multiple years for my clients?
Yes, you can. If multiple returns are being filed for the same customer covering several years, the same username and password may be used across all years. Make sure to start with the oldest return preparation first, for ease of information to carry forward.
Each tax return is prepared in the same way as any other tax return. We recommend the preparer include their business email address with each account set up. The preparer enters their client’s information into each section of the software and moves through the program answering the prompts, including state tax return preparation. However, before entering the Final Steps section, the paid preparer needs to enter their own information in the paid preparer section.
What information do I need as a paid preparer?
Anyone who is paid to prepare tax returns should have the following information:
- Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). Tax return preparers can register with the IRS at www.IRS.gov/tax-professionals to complete the PTIN application and receive a PTIN. By entering a PTIN in FreeTaxUSA you are confirming it is both accurate and you are the registered PTIN owner. If you are paid to prepare this tax return, the IRS wants information about you, so they know who prepared the tax return. Many of our customers prepare tax returns for their friends or family members, and they aren't being paid, so they don't need to enter any information about this. The IRS only wants your information if you're a paid preparer who is being paid to prepare the tax return.
- In order to e-file tax returns, you must have an Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) assigned to you by the IRS. To apply for an EFIN, go to the IRS e-Services website and complete the e-file application. If you need help completing your e-file application, call the IRS e-help desk at 1-866-255-0654. Please note, it can take up to 45 days for the IRS to process your application and issue an EFIN. You may, however, paper-file your client’s tax returns without an EFIN.
What do I do after I get my EFIN?
We are required to send the IRS the paid preparer’s EFIN to confirm the number’s validity before FreeTaxUSA can e-file any returns for the paid preparer.
You'll have a better chance of having the IRS verify your EFIN if you enter a Tracking Number on the ‘Tell us about yourself’ screen in the paid preparer information section.
Please note it usually takes 4 business days for the IRS to verify your EFIN.
Finally, we'll send an email to the email address you entered on the Paid Preparer Information screen once we receive the IRS's response.
