Password Safety
FreeTaxUSA works hard to keep your tax and personal data safe. In addition to relying on our multiple levels of security, there are some things you can do to help keep your data safe.
Passwords are the keys to your FreeTaxUSA and other online accounts. They allow you to access your account, enter your tax information, make changes to your personal information, submit your taxes, and more. Unfortunately, passwords can be vulnerable to hackers, who may use them to steal your identity, money, or data. That's why password safety is crucial for protecting your data and your privacy.
How to Create a Strong Password
A strong password is one that’s hard to guess and easy to remember. Here are some tips to create a strong password:
- Consider using a passphrase instead of a single password. A passphrase is usually multiple words and is easier to remember. For example, the passphrase “Sun-Setting-Alfalfa-Reflects-Red” might be easier to remember than “sGwuj8RzXp!.” The longer length makes it difficult for hackers to guess.
- Avoid using common words, names, dates, or phrases that can be easily guessed.
- Make your password at least 12 characters long, and preferably longer.
- Use a different and unique password for each account. Never reuse passwords.
- Use a password manager to store and generate your passwords securely (see our article about Password Managers to learn more).
How to Keep Your Password Safe
Creating a strong password isn’t enough. You also need to keep your password safe from hackers and other threats. Here are some ways to keep your password safe:
- Never share your password with anyone, and don't write it down or store it in an unsecure place.
- Never enter your password on a public or untrusted computer, network, or website.
- Always log out of your account when you are done using it, and don't leave your device unattended.
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account, which adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code or a device to verify your identity. FreeTaxUSA accounts require 2FA via either SMS (text message) or phone call.
- Consider using a passkey versus a password on your FreeTaxUSA account (see our Passkeys article for more information).
Conclusion
Password safety is important for protecting your account and your privacy. By following these tips, you can create a strong password that will help keep your account secure. Remember, your password is your responsibility. Take it seriously and avoid taking any risks.
