Tax season can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to choosing the right tool to file your taxes online. Until recently, two options for filing a federal tax return online were FreeTaxUSA and Direct File. However, the IRS has suspended the Direct File program. This article explores what FreeTaxUSA and Direct File are, highlights their key differences, and explains what the program’s suspension means for taxpayers going forward.
What is FreeTaxUSA?
FreeTaxUSA is a privately owned online tax preparation service founded in 2001. It allows users to file their federal tax returns for free and, at the same time, file their state tax return for a small fee.
The software leads taxpayers through the filing process using a series of questions and prompts, helping them claim deductions and credits they may be eligible for. FreeTaxUSA is available to a wide range of taxpayers and offers customer support along with various upgrade options such as Deluxe and Pro Support. Our services cover many common tax situations, including itemized deductions and self-employment income.
What was Direct File?
Direct File was a tax filing program created in 2023 and operated by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The goal of Direct File was to offer eligible taxpayers a free, government-run method to file their federal tax returns online without the use of a third-party provider. As of the 2024 tax season, Direct File was available to taxpayers with simple tax situations in select states. The program was designed to be straightforward, offering a secure way to file federal taxes directly with the IRS.
Key Differences Between FreeTaxUSA and Direct File
- Provider: FreeTaxUSA is run by a private company, while Direct File was operated by the IRS, a government agency.
- Eligibility: FreeTaxUSA is available to most taxpayers, regardless of income level or complexity of return. Direct File was limited to taxpayers with simple tax situations and was only available in certain states (24 states as of 2024).
- Federal vs. state filing: FreeTaxUSA allows free federal filing. Direct File also allowed free federal filing. FreeTaxUSA charges a small fee for state returns, while Direct File didn’t support state tax returns at all. A separate state return had to be filed individually.
- User support: FreeTaxUSA offers online support and paid upgrades for additional services. Direct File provided help from IRS employees, but support was limited to the scope of the program.
- Data security: Both platforms use security measures to protect your information. With Direct File, your data stayed within the IRS, while FreeTaxUSA, as a third-party provider, also complies with federal security standards.
- Upgrades: FreeTaxUSA offers optional paid upgrades and additional services, while Direct File didn’t offer additional services or upgrades.
Direct File program suspended:
Following a review of the 2023-2024 Direct File program, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced in October 2025 that the program would be suspended due to high expenses, low participation, and a need to focus on other priorities. The IRS will instead emphasize the use of its Free File program, which allows taxpayers to prepare taxes for free using third-party software in a way that’s cost-effective, sustainable, and beneficial.
In summary, while FreeTaxUSA and Direct File both aim to simplify online tax filing, they differ significantly in their providers, eligibility requirements, and available features. With the suspension of the Direct File program, taxpayers seeking a free federal tax filing solution should consider options like FreeTaxUSA or other IRS Free File partners. Carefully reviewing your tax situation and support needs can help you choose the service that best fits your circumstances, ensuring a smooth and secure experience during the tax season.
